Days of Future Past
Presenter: Eric Childress, Consulting Project Manager, OCLC Research - [biography]
Conference Room 3 Web services, middleware, microformats, ubiquitous computing, quantum significance flux, networkflow, the long tail, and "open" everything -- what does it all mean? And why should I be wary of acronymic density? Hear Eric Childress of OCLC Research speak to these and other technological marvels and mysteries as he guides us through a landscape of digital rivers and paper lakes to the summit of hi-tech enlightenment.
10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
Security Incident Response Presenter: Jim Clausing, SANS Internet Storm Center - [biography]
Conference Room 2 This session is an introduction to incident response and will cover the six steps of incident response and talk about a few (free or inexpensive) forensic tools that can be used for investigating incidents in Windows networks.
Free / Open Source Software for Libraries Presenter: Dan Chudnov, Systems Programmer, Yale Center for Medical Informatics - [biography]
Conference Room 3 The Free and Open Source software movements have succeeded wildly, making it better than ever to be a library geek. A review of what Free/Open Source software is and why it matters will be followed by a discussion of recent developments, technical considerations, and issues to watch for when implementing Free/Open Source software at your library.
Bringing the Information Highway into Your Library Presenter: Terence J. Sullivan, Vice President, Schooley Caldwell Associates - [biography]
David M. Relko, Manager, Electrical Engineering Department, Schooley Caldwell Associates - [biography]
Conference Room 4 Getting the wires from the fiber optic lines in the street to the back of the computers is no small task. But it’s not just about wires . . .

Things to consider: Professional services; Building permits; Server space; Special air conditioning; Clean power source; Placement of the computers; Lighting; Heat gain to the main space; A path or conduits for the wiring; Aesthetics

Security Incident Response (continued) Presenter: Jim Clausing - [biography]
Conference Room 2 (This is a continuation of the previous session)
Give PC Problems the "Boot" Presenter: Glen Horton, Technology Coordinator, Greater Cincinnati Library Consortium - [biography]
Conference Room 3 In this session, Glen will demonstrate various Free and Open Source products that can be used to boot and maintain/diagnose/repair PC problems even when Windows will not start. Do you need to rescue or backup data? Scan for viruses? Test hardware? This and more can all be done with free software that runs from a bootable CD or bootable flash drive. Don't miss this opportunity to make some great, free additions to your toolbox.
The Nuts n' Bolts of Blogs and RSS Presenter: Laura Solomon, Web Applications Supervisor, Cleveland Public Library - [biography]
Conference Room 4 You've heard the hype. Are there good reasons for implementing a blog or an RSS feed for your library? If so, how is it done? Get some practical information to help you decide if these technologies are for you and learn how your library can get started with these online services.
12:15 p.m. - 1:15 p.m.
Lunch (on your own)
1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Georgia PINES Presenter: Julie Walker, Pines Program Director - [biography]
David Singleton, Deputy State Librarian for the Georgia Public Library Service - [biography]
Conference Room 3 Georgia's PINES Program has embarked on an ambitious project to design and implement an open source integrated library system for the use of its 252 public libraries. The Evergreen software development project is creating much interest in the open source software community. PINES libraries plan to begin using the software in late 2006. Deputy State Librarian David Singleton and PINES Program Director Julie Walker take you inside the Evergreen development process, and will offer a sneak preview of the Evergreen software.
Shibboleth: Secure Authentication in an Insecure World. Presenter: Eva Allen, Consulting Software Engineer, OCLC - [biography]
Conference Room 4 Shibboleth is standards-based, open source middleware software which provides Web Single SignOn (SSO) across or within organizational boundaries. It allows sites to make informed authorization decisions for individual access of protected online resources in a privacy-preserving manner.

Evan Allen will discuss Shibboleth, its advantages, how it works, and where it's headed.

Bandwidth and Network Management Using Open Source Tools Presenter: Brad Stephens, NOLA Regional Library System
Conference Room 3 With Web 2.0, streaming video, VoIP and more networking utilization continues to rise and more libraries are beginning to push the limits of their Internet bandwidth. Think your only choice is adding a higher capacity circuit? Well we've got a few other solutions to consider, all of which can be done with some Open Source tools to shape and control traffic flow. We'll explore topics including caching, traffic priority, bandwidth throttling, and quality of service and see how they can help you squeeze more life out of your network connections.
Sustaining and Disruptive Technologies Presenter: Eric Schnell, Head of Information Technology, Prior Health Sciences Library - Ohio State University - [biography]
Conference Room 4 This presentation will discuss innovation in libraries and how the value placed on sustaining current technologies may leave libraries ill-prepared to manage disruptive technologies.
