| Eva Allen | Consulting Software Engineer, Internet2 Panelist, OCLC, Inc. Eva Allen has over 25 years of software development experience. Her work has familiarized her with various flavors of the UNIX operating system, including System V, SunOS, AIX and HP-UX, and her professional software development has been in the major languages Fortran IV, C, C++, and Java and numerous minor languages. She began her career as a Member of Technical Staff at Bell Laboratories and is currently a Consulting Software Engineer at OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc. She has worked with the Shibboleth core team and managed the OCLC Shibboleth pilot program for the past two years. In her spare time she enjoys reading, playing piano, and crocheting. |

| Paula Armentrout |
Paula Armentrout has been employed with the Ohio Attorney General's office for 21 years in various capacities. She currently oversees the activities of the Education Unit within the Consumer Protection Section. In this capacity, she is responsible for the development and marketing of the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Section. This involves providing educational presentations to a wide range of consumer groups across Ohio. Paula also serves as a liaison for the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Section, between other State agencies and State and local working groups.
Prior to serving as Education Coordinator, Paula performed the duties of the Consumer Assistance Unit Manager, supervising a staff of 14 consumer protection specialists. Paula also served as a Mediation Specialist, mediating complaints on the behalf of consumers. In performing these duties, Paula has established a thorough background of Ohio’s consumer laws and their application when protecting consumers. Paula is the mother on one son, Aaron. She enjoys outdoor activities and is an avid Ohio State Buckeye fan. |
| Craig R. Auge |
Mr. Auge is a partner in the Columbus office where he practices in the technology and intellectual property group.
He has assisted clients in computer, technology, copyright and electronic commerce matters. In this capacity, Mr. Auge has counseled vendors, purchasers, manufacturers and users on protecting intellectual property and confidential information. He has assisted with all aspects of transactions involving technology consulting and implementation services, software development and licensing, and database sharing. His practice also includes general commercial law. Mr. Auge is a member of the Computer Law Association and the Columbus Intellectual Property Law Association. He is a member of the Board of Trustees for the Friends of the Columbus Metropolitan Library. |
| Eric R. Childress |
Eric R. Childress is a Consulting Project Manager in OCLC Research. He provides project management support for OCLC Research initiatives and participates as a contributing team member on selected research projects. Eric reports to Chief Scientist Thom Hickey.
A specialist in metadata standards and systems, he has been active professionally in the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS), the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC), and the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI), serving as chair, member, or liaison with various committees and working groups. Eric has authored or co-authored articles and columns for a variety of professional journals including Library Resources & Technical Services, the VRA Bulletin, and the Journal of Internet Cataloging. His wide-ranging expertise on metadata-related topics is often tapped for invited presentations at international professional conferences and workshops. Prior to OCLC Childress worked in the cataloging departments of the libraries at Elon University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). He holds a B.A. (Geography) and M.L.S. from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. At OCLC Eric Childress has been part of the product teams that developed the OCLC CatExpress service and Connexion. For OCLC Research, he served on the CORC (Cooperative Online Resource Catalog) project during 1998-2000, and currently is working on the FAST (Faceted Application of Subject Terminology) and Metadata Switch projects. |
| Daniel Chudnov |
Daniel Chudnov is a librarian and a research programmer currently working as lead developer for the Canary Database and the unalog project at the Yale Center for Medical Informatics. Prior to this he worked on several well-known open source projects, including the initial development and implementation of DSpace at MIT Libraries, the jake project at the Cushing/Whitney Medical Library at the Yale University School of Medicine, and a precursor to the award-winning Prospero project, the first widely-used web-based document delivery toolkit. He is a frequent speaker and author on technology and the importance of free software in libraries, and started the oss4lib weblog and listserv in 1999 to promote the use of open source in our community.
Daniel earned an MS at the School of Information in 1997 and studied Economics and Japanese as an undergraduate, both at the University of Michigan. He is currently enrolled as a master's student in Computer Science at Southern Connecticut State University. In 2005 he received the LITA/Brett Butler Entrepreneurship Award from the Library & Information Technology Association of the American Library Association. |
| Jim Clausing | Jim Clausing has over 25 years experience in the IT field (including system administration and security for most of that time). Jim has done research in parallel processing and distributed systems. For the last 10 years, he has focused primarily on network security including server hardening (primarily Unix/Linux), intrusion detection (host and network-based), firewalls, perimeter defense, incident response, and forensics. Jim holds the GIAC GCIA, GCFA, GCFW, GSIP, GSOC and GREM, CISSP, and Checkpoint's CCSA and is a member of the GIAC board of directors. He is a volunteer incident handler for the Internet Storm Center (isc.sans.org), was a coauthor for the 2003 SANS Press book _Securing Solaris 8 & 9 Using the Center for Internet Security Benchmark_, and has taught or mentored nearly a dozen SANS classes in Columbus. He enjoys cycling and is an instrument-rated private pilot. |
| Anita Cook | Anita has been with OhioLINK for 14 years managing the technical and development staff for OhioLINK's multiple projects and services. She has an MLS from the University of Denver and an MA in MIS from the University of Nebraska. |
| Daniel L. Farslow | Dr. Daniel L. Farslow, Educational Technology Consultant at the eTech Ohio Commission, is the State E-Rate Coordinator for Ohio and provides support and information to Ohio schools and libraries on all aspects of the federal E-Rate program. Dr. Farslow provides E-Rate Workshops each fall to prepare applicants for the new funding year and responds one-on-one to any applicant inquiries regarding eligible services, the application process, application review, and program administration in Washington. |
| Chris Hamrick | Christopher A. Hamrick is Ergonomics Technical Advisor, Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation, Division of Safety & Hygiene, where he is responsible for ergonomics projects and technical consultation. Prior to joining BWC, Chris was Director of Ergonomic Services for CNA Risk Management in Chicago, IL where he provided ergonomics consulting services to clients. From 1989 to 1995, Chris worked for the U.S. Bureau of Mines (now NIOSH) in Pittsburgh, PA as an Industrial Engineer, where he performed research directed toward reducing the risk of injury in the mining industry. He holds Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Industrial and Systems Engineering from The Ohio State University. Chris Hamrick is a Certified Professional Ergonomist and is currently serving as a Director on the Board of Certification in Professional Ergonomics. Chris is also a member of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) and is a Senior Member of the Institute of Industrial Engineers. He was awarded the 2005 Practioner’s Award by the HFES Industrial Ergonomics Technical Group. |
| Glen Horton |
Glen has served as the Technology Coordinator for the Greater Cincinnati Library Consortium (GCLC) since 1999. His duties require him to have experience in a wide range of technologies. He is responsible for providing technology assistance, technology training, and facilitating shared projects within the GCLC membership.
Glen speaks on a variety of technology topics at the local, state, and national levels. This is Glen's sixth time speaking at the TechConnections Conference. |
| Stephen Hedges |
Stephen Hedges has been named the new executive director of the Ohio Public Library Information Network (OPLIN). He previously served as director of the Nelsonville Public Library system in Athens, Ohio.
Under Hedges’ direction, Nelsonville became the first public library system in the United States to use open source software for all circulation, cataloging, management and web services, positioning it as a world-wide leader in the implementation of open source library software. He also inaugurated and directed the implementation of Ohio’s first public library free summer lunch program for children. Hedges earned a Master of Library and Information Science degree at the University of South Carolina (1995), and completed the Management Development Program for Library Administrators at Miami University (1992). He also earned a Doctor of Philosophy in the History and Theory of Music at the University of Chicago (1983), a Master of Music degree from Bowling Green State University (1976), and a Bachelor of Music degree from Ohio University (1974). Prior to working in public libraries, Hedges established a music publishing business in Athens, Ohio. |
| Marshall Keys |
After a decade as Executive Director of NELINET, the largest library organization in New England, Marshall Keys founded MDA Consulting to pursue his interest in the effects of large-scale social, economic, political, and technological change on libraries and other information-intensive organizations. He encourages librarians to think strategically by serving as a facilitator in their planning processes and by demonstrating and teaching the art of environmental scanning. He holds a Ph.D. in English from Vanderbilt and a Master’s in Library Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Mr. Keys won the 1999 Emerson Greenaway Award, given by the New England Library Association for outstanding career contributions to librarianship. In July, 2000, he was named to the National Advocacy Honor Roll by the Association of Library Trustees and Advocates. The citation said, "Each time you listen to Marshall speak or read a column he wrote, you are challenged, energized, and proud to serve in the library profession." In September, 2000, he was named a Distinguished Alumnus by the University of North Carolina School of Information and Library Studies. From 1999 through 2004, he was a member of the adjunct faculty of the Simmons College Graduate School of Library and Information Science, where he taught Financial Management for Librarians and Information Entrepreneurship. He has been a member of the board of the PALINET library network and is currently a director of the North East Document Conservation Center, where he was recently elected Treasurer. He has done workshops and served as a facilitator for many libraries and library consortia and has given keynote speeches for a number of state, provincial, and regional library associations and for ALA divisions. Marshall Keys and his wife Sandy live in Nantucket, Massachusetts, where he recently began yet another career when he got his shellfish license. |
| David M. Relko | Mr. Relko is a professional engineer, earning his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from The Pennsylvania State University in 1976. He has 10 years of engineering experience in heavy industry and 20 years of experience as a manager or chief electrical engineer in private practice consulting engineering. He has spent the past 11 years with Schooley Caldwell Associates where he is the Manager of the Electrical Engineering Department, designing or overseeing the design of all electrical and data/communications work in the office. |
| Eric Schnell | Eric Schnell is an Associate Professor and Head of Information Technology for the Prior Health Sciences Library at The Ohio State University. In 2005 Mr. Schnell was named by Library Journal as one of 30 movers and shakers in the library profession. Has as authored numerous articles on technology in libraries and has been involved with two projects that have won the Medical Library Association's Frank Bradway Rogers Information Advancement Award. He is an active blogger with today's presentation entitled "Technology and Innovation: The Librarian's Dilemma" resulting from several recent postings. |
| David Singleton | David Singleton is the Deputy Director and Deputy State Librarian for the Georgia Public Library Service. He helped to develop the original proposals for PINES in 1998 and 1999. At the Georgia Public Library Service, he has also held the positions of Acting Director, PINES Project Manager, Library Services Coordinator, and Resource Sharing/Interlibrary Cooperation Consultant. David held managerial positions as part of the Gwinnett County (GA) Public Library; and was Director of the Transylvania County (NC) Library. He holds a B.A. in English Literature and the M.S.L.S., both from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. |
| Laura Solomon | Laura Solomon is the Web Applications Supervisor for the Cleveland Public Library. She has been doing web development and design for over nine years, in both libraries and as an independent consultant. She also authored a statewide web site usability study in 2004 that evaluated the site of every public library in Ohio. As a former children's librarian, she enjoys bringing the "fun of technology" to audiences and in giving libraries the tools they need to better serve the virtual customer. |
| Terence J. Sullivan | Mr. Sullivan is a professional engineer and architect, registered in 12 states and Washington, DC. He has over 27 years experience with Schooley Caldwell Associates, where he is Vice President and Director of Engineering. He received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering at Michigan State University and a B.S. in Architecture at The Ohio State University. Mr. Sullivan is also an adjunct professor in the graduate program at the Knowlton School of Architecture at the Ohio State University. |
| Julie W. Walker | Julie Walker is the PINES Program Director for the Georgia Public Library Service. She served as project consultant for PINES since its inception in 1998. Julie held the position of Associate Director of the Athens Regional Library System in Athens, GA for 13 years. She held managerial positions at the Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County, Forsyth County Public Library in Winston-Salem, NC and Randolph Public Library in Asheboro, NC. She holds a B.A. in Political Science and the M.S.L.S, both from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Julie is immediate past president of the Georgia Library Association. |
